The Dynamic Landscape: Creating powerful photos

Going beyond the ordinary towards a powerful, personal, and artistic vision.

August 13th-15th, 2010

Amherst, MA

Friday 7pm-10pm
Saturday 6am-12pm and 1:30pm-8pm
Sunday 9am-12pm

An opportunity to work with noted landscape photographer Michael ZIde, in a hands-on, in-the-field, coaching session. Zide will concentrate on the important decision making process that goes into a successful image. Creative controls such as shutter-speed, aperture control, lens choice, point of view, and framing will be examined. Technique will be used to enforce gesture. What is gesture and how can we bring it forward, strengthen its expression, and allow it to speak in the clearest possible voice? Go beyond mere record making with this workshop and move towards a more evocative and poetic image.

In today’s digital era, the click of the shutter is only the beginning. Visual arts and design instructor Peter Chilton will showcase the digital techniques that are available today. Increase your photographic impact by leveraging modern software and post-processing capabilities.

Michael Zide:

In the world of black and white landscape photography, Michael Zide has a most selective eye. He possesses that rare quality of artful seeing, bringing his sensitivity to gesture and mood to every image. Sensual and tactile, his work elicits a visceral response.

Over the past 30 years, he has created a body of work that has been featured both internationally and in galleries from New York City to Los Angeles. Portfolios of his landscape photography have appeared in magazines such as Silvershotz, Black and White, Today’s Photographer, Fotomagazin, Fine Home, and Photo/Design, while manufacturers of the finest digital coffee table books such as Graphistudios continue to use collections of his work to show off the lush tones of their printing process. His photography has also been used to advertise Schneider large format lenses, Sinar Bron large format view cameras, Mitsubishi photographic printing papers, Polaroid Corporation instant imaging, MPix digital printing services, and Millers Imaging.

His landscape photographs from Martha’s Vineyard Island, Western Massachusetts and the Southwest are in private, corporate, and museum collections.

Selected as a Master of Moab fine art imaging,  Michael’s work is printed on Moab fine art printing papers and exhibited at industry shows here and abroad. Sponsored by Manfrotto, (formally Bogen Imaging), Michael speaks about his unique vision at PhotoPlus Expo in New York City.

He divides his time between teaching at the Hallmark School of Photography, running workshops, mentoring and speaking about  the art of landscape photography.
